Why?

A poll conducted in 2005 shows that 85% of the deaf community in Denver find it necessary to build Veditz Center for communication reasons that affect a lot of aspects of one’s lives.

“Communication is at the heart of everything human beings do; it defines and gives meaning to our emotions, beliefs, hopes, creativity, and life experiences…” (The CA Deaf Education Report, 1999)

Shown below is an abbriveated outline on selected reasons of the importance for Deaf people to be able to communicate with others in their natural language:

  • With roughly 100,000 deaf people residing in the Denver metro area, more than 80% of them were or are being raised from families who are not fluent in ASL and 67% of employed deaf adults work in an environment without the use of ASL, thus they do not have a common place where they can communicate in their natural language.
  • According to Essortment.com, the best places to make new friends are health clubs, classes, sports, clubs of your interest, volunteering, seminars or workshops, and workplace. Deaf individuals find these opportunities inaccessible to them due to a barrier of communication.
  • A majority of non-deaf American citizens have a common language and culture that they share with many people around them which they consider vital to one’s growth. The Deaf community also has a language and a culture of their own which needs to be embraced.
  • Services provided for the general public are not effective toward deaf individuals because they are unable to speak ASL, also there are particular services meant for deaf people by non-deaf organizations who are not sensitive to the culture nor know the language, thus it clearly shows such services are inadequate.
  • It’s a well known fact it is much more cost effective to provide services to a community by their own people for clarity in communication, cultural sensitivity, and effectiveness in providing one’s needs.
In whole, the Deaf community have expressed for a long time with a desire to establish a sense of community by providing a place where they feel belonged and an opportunity for them to develop leadership skills, independence, define our self worth and receive needed services in our natural language.
